Roadside bombs

Last night I was watching that new show on FX titled Over There about the war in Iraq. In it, they capture the horror of a roadside bomb tearing through a military transport, the aftermath of which is a soldier howling in pain as he is carried away in a stretcher. Gruesome stuff, but it reminded me of what U.S. servicemen are facing every day in that country. Just today:

A roadside bomb tore through a U.S. assault vehicle in western Iraq on Wednesday, killing 14 American Marines and a civilian interpreter in the deadliest attack of its kind against U.S. forces since the war began.

14 men in one shot is no small incident. When you really stop and think about it, that's 14 men's wives, children, and relatives that are affected for life in one swoop. I still support what we are doing over there, but sometimes I wish that it didn't have to cost so much unnecessary death. I have confidence that things will get better and the country will be stabilized once the hostile elements are silenced by the overwhelming majority of Iraqis that desire freedom. Nevertheless, it's hard for anyone to sit here and continue to learn every day of a dozen or more new casualties in the war against terror. May God bless and protect those brave souls.
